UNMERITED FAVOR
John 8:1-11

When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there . . . Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” — Luke 23:33-34 (NIV)

As I backed out of the driveway, my girlfriend, Misty, and I were chatting with our friends who were sitting in the back seat. Then, a horrible metallic shriek and intense jarring of the car silenced us all. I had just backed over a huge boulder beside the driveway that was meant to keep people from driving on the grass. The car belonged to Misty’s parents. Her mother gaped from the kitchen window. Before we left, she had told us to be careful. Near tears and shamefaced, Misty and I entered the house to beg her mom’s forgiveness. Instantly she said, “I forgive you,” handing us the keys to her other car. She then interrupted our protests to say, “I said I forgive you. Now just be careful and have a good time.”I wasn’t yet a Christian, but that one act of forgiveness by a Christian is what helped me to believe in God’s forgiveness, which I’ve had to ask for countless times since. And now, as a believer, I know that I’m called to be generous in forgiving others. Because God continues to forgive me when I mess up and because a Christian modeled that same mercy toward me, I am now better able to forgive others.
